Harvard Pays Grad Students $50,000

The Crimson reports on Harvard now paying Grad Students $50,000 for 10 months. They note:

Ph.D. students in Harvard’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences will be paid at least $50,000 in program stipends, increasing most stipends by more than 10 percent, GSAS Dean Emma Dench announced in an email Monday.

Back in my time at MIT, 1970 I recall, I got $400 per month as an Instructor. Free tuition at MIT and in joint programs as well. Now is $400 in 1970 equal to $5,000 in 2023? I had no cell phone, in fact no phone, had a 1965 VW, lots of miles, wife and 2 kids, no health insurance, it was covered by MIT. Rent was $125 a month. One pair of shoes, one winter coat, no hat, etc.

It would be interesting to compare net after expenses.
