We Miss General Groves

The NY Times as usual bemoans the execution of the vaccine distribution. Blame is everywhere. But consider this. General Groves was in charge of the Manhattan project. It included the crew, maintenance, selection of B-29, and all the way down to the length of the takeoff field. The current scheme to follow the previous example, just dropped shipped the bombs to say San Francisco, and let other people yet unnamed take it the rest of the way. The current General acted as if all he had to do was to deliver the device to the airport in San Francisco and then the Japanese would take over from there! In almost all cases the Governors were adversaries to the Feds. No surprise. Furthermore their handling locally often led to mass deaths at LTC facilities, see New York and New Jersey.

The problem is that we have 50 Governors in charge, and these are the same folks who run Motor Vehicle Offices. They demanded to be in control. The CDC had every state submit a plan, then at the end they issued their own. So what do we have, chaos. The CDC is an organization in the state of collapse, from the monitoring, the tests, and so forth. The General in charge just dropped shipped to 400 locations, his job was done. Not even close General. You were trusting in the kindness of strangers, the locals, who for the most part were clueless.

Go back to the Salk vaccine. I was on the first lines. We were just told where to be when and get in line. Now we have no idea where or when or who. Just that there is a dilapidated Sears store on a mountain top in western New Jersey that will be the collection spot most likely in some snow storm. Good choice Phil.
