The above was presented at a NYAS meeting this week (by Dr Bette Korber) on COVID. It represents the presence of the original virus and variants (actually mutants). What is terrifying is the fact that the variants are exploding and pushing out the original form (called the "wild type"). We have been arguing this for threat for weeks if not months. The issue is to question what could be done. The answer is simple: random sampling of sequences for the variants and making that public. Again it is independent researchers doing one-offs and not the unmovable CDC.
On the first anniversary of the recognition of a pandemic we truly hope a year from now we do not have to report poorer news.
